The city of Kimberley is located in the southeast of British Columbia. The heavy industries in the city have historically been focused on the mining industry, but have diversified to the manufacturing, food processing and the transport and logistics industries.

There are three industrial zones in Kimberley, whose zonal classifications are provided for in the Kimberley Land Use Bylaw. Under these provisions, the warehouses are categorized and diversified into warehouses and cold warehouse storage facilities. Warehouses may be found in the following industrially zoned lands:

  • M-1 for Industrial, Wholesale and Transportation

  • M-2 for Light Industrial

Under the M-1 Industrial Zone, the provisions of the bylaw list the following applicable uses:

  • manufacturing Industry;

  • processing Industry;

  • welding, machine and repair shops;

  • equipment wholesaling and repairs;

  • transportation;

  • truck terminals;

  • storage and sale of construction materials;

  • warehousing and cold storage;

  • bulk storage, sale of materials;

  • storage and sale of feed and fertilizer;

  • tire manufacturing, including vulcanizing, sales, services and repairs;

  • monument including sales;

  • vehicle (Bylaw 1913 Amnd 12) sales, wrecking and repair of vehicles;

  • public utility use;

  • salvage yard

  • recycling depot (Bylaw 1913, Amnd 12)

The following provisions apply to warehouses under the M-1 zoning classification:

  • No person shall construct or permit construction of a building or structure in

the M-1 zone which exceeds a height of 12.0 m (40 ft.).

  • The site coverage shall not exceed 0.7

The following warehouse applications are applicable for land zoned under the M-2 Classification:

  • Refrigerated warehousing industry;

  • Storage and warehousing industry including the storage of recreational vehicles;

These provisions apply to industrial land use under the M-2 zoned land:

  • No person shall construct or permit construction of a building or structure in the M-2 zone which exceeds a height of 7.5 m (25 ft.).

  • The site coverage shall not exceed 0.7.

Additional provisions in the bylaw provide the following for off-loading parking spaces:

  • Industrial: Manufacturing, fabricating, processing, warehousing and wholesaling – gross floor area 1000m2 or less: 0 off-loading parking spaces

  • Industrial: Manufacturing, fabricating, processing, warehousing and wholesaling - gross floor area greater than 1000m2 but less than 2300m2: 1 parking space.

Warehouses in Kimberley are found in the following areas with their uses:

  • South of the Kimberley Hwy near Strong Rd contain warehouses for automobile sales, general storage use and lumber processing.

  • The curve of Knighton Rd contains warehouses used for construction supplies and general storage use.
